Natural Resources Essay Example for Free

Characteristic Resources Essay Sustainable power source is vitality that is gotten from common assets which can be recharged normally, for example, tides, daylight, geothermal warmth, downpour and wind. Sustainable power source represents around 10. 1 of the privately delivered power in the United States. As indicated by Nebel and Wright, hydro power which is produced utilizing water is the prime wellspring of sustainable power source separated from sun based vitality, wind power, geothermal force and biomass and bio-fuel energies (214). The Tazimina venture in Alaska is a case of hydropower plant that doesn't require a dam. Other hydroelectricity dams are found in Tennessee valley and on the Colorado River. Wind power which uses wind to create power is turning out to be increasingly well known and is for the most part utilized in certain locales, for example, in Appalachians, Western United States and Alaska. Despite the fact that this wellspring of vitality doesn't dirty the earth it presents negative natural effects on untamed life. Albeit sun powered innovations and geothermal force have insignificant dangerous ecological effects biomass power has the planned of turning into the main vitality source not just in the U. S however the whole world. Biomass can be delivered all over the place and is gotten from squanders and liquor energizes and can be changed over into melted fuel to meet transportation vitality necessities. It can likewise be utilized to create power and as a wellspring of warmth. Ethanol and biodiesel are normal types of bio-powers utilized in the U. S and are delivered from plants. The U. S office should concentrate on observing methods of changing over cellulose from woodland buildup, farming squanders and different materials to ethanol which is the most ecological benevolent wellspring of fuel. Since the U. S government discharged $30 million shillings towards the subsidizing of Clean Energies Technologies to upgrade the progress to a reasonable vitality future, this can significantly help with building a comprehensive state sustainable power source conspire that tends to the full scope of market issues and advancements. As it is seen by the World Watch Institute (2006), we as a whole need vitality that is secure, improves general wellbeing, ensures the earth, is solid, offers innovative initiative and addresses environmental change. As an Olympic champion, Jenner stated that he was very confused and was focused only on running away from his gender identity issues, using the Olympics and his athleticism as a way to do so. As a husband, he felt very flustered and restless in his marriages and said that he had to deal with

Analysis Of The Poem The Dead By James Joyce - 1280 Words

Tormented by the devastation wrought by World War I, individuals across the world struggled to communicate their experiences, thoughts, and sorrows in their fragmented societies. Authors such as James Joyce, T.S. Elliot, and Virginia Wolfe gave voice to these individuals through their implementation of a stream of consciousness writing style that became a key feature in the modernist literary movement. In his short story â€Å"The Dead†, the final tale in his collection Dubliners, James Joyce represents the struggles of a well-respected figure whose depression and low self-esteem causes him to agonize over an annual speech he gives and interferes with his ability to communicate his desires to his wife. Similarly, in his poem, â€Å"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,† T.S. Elliot illustrates how the anxiety a man faces over how he will be interpreted by others impedes on his desire to communicate. Likewise, in her novel Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Wolfe’s depiction of the anguish war veterans’ suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) deal with in their ardent desire to communicate exposes the darkest ramifications of the war. These authors in modernist literature demonstrate the inhibiting effects of mental illnesses on an individual’s ability to communicate, resulting in their societal alienation. Fair-Value Accounting Accounting and Public Policy

Question: Discuss about the Fair-Value Accounting for Accounting and Public Policy. Answer: a) Accounting standards across the world, AASB included (Australian Accounting Standards Board) give two methods for recognising the value of an asset. One is the historical method and the other is the fair value method. Historical cost method involves recording the value of the asset at its historical cost or the price at which it was acquired whereas the fair value method involves revaluing the asset to its current market price at regular intervals obtaining the price from that of a similar and comparable asset. At the outset, fair value method looks the more superior method of valuing an asset, however there are issues which arise when a company values asserts according to this method. The first and the biggest issue is whether companies can employ discretion while valuing the assets at fair value.(Scott, 2010) A fair value of an asset should be devoid of any bias and that is what fair accounting aims for as well; to have the least discretionary values as recorded values of assets in the financial assets (Financial Accounting Standards Board) prescribes a three level hierarchy for the fair valuation of an asset. The main problem arises when a company or an auditor has to value an asset according to specifications. There is enough evidence in corporate history that fair value accounting can lead to dubious practises and mislead the users of the financial statements. One of the major exploiters of this method was the US behemoth Enron who misused it and reported the gain arising from revaluation as business gains thus misleading one and all about the financial health of the company. (Benston, 2006) Academic literature seems to be divided on their views regarding the benefits of fair value accounting. While there is no doubt that fair value is more relevant, the fact that it is not always reliable also cannot be overlooked. Hence it adoption leads to a trade-off where one has to choose one quality over the another.(Ramanna, 2013)So any company while adopting fair value needs to keep in mind that while assets valued at fair value would be more relevant but they arent necessarily reliable. (Ryan, 2008) As explained immediately in the paragraph above for the given scenario Karrick Gold and Copper Ltd(KGC) faces the same conundrum that every company would while deciding on whether or not to use the fair value accounting to value their plant property and equipment. Since it is not possible to determine the fair value of the plant, property and equipment reliably and the IAS 16.31 clearly states that the revaluation model should be used only if the fair value of the asset less depreciation and impairment can be measured reliably.(Deloitte, 2012) For their case, it must be opined there are so many uncertainties that loss of reliability must take precedence over increased relevance. b) We are given three different values of the plant property and equipment of KGC Ltd. One is the book value of the PPE which is recorded as 16.5 billion AUD. Now also given that valuation would be 12 billion AUD if it lasts for seven years and the value is expected to increase by 2.5 times to 30 billion UAD should the life exceeds by an additional 10 years. Further, the replacement cost is given as 20.5 billion AUD. From the following data the fair and true value of the financial assets is to be determined. The IAS 13 which is the standard and lays down the framework for valuing assets at fair value gives three methods or approaches while valuing assets at fair value. These three methods are the cost approach, the income approach and the valuation approach. For the given scenario cost approach would be the best fit and most suited. As per IAS 13 cost approach fair and true value would be the replacement cost i.e. 20.5 billion dollars. The standard prescribes that the fair value of a non-financial asset takes into account a market participants ability to gain economic gains from the highest and best possible use of the asset. In that sense one would estimate the fair value to be 30 billion but the standard also adds that the best possible use is subject to physical, legal and financial constraints. Since the legal aspects of KGC are not clear as there are lawsuits pending and there is uncertainty regarding its operations in every sense be it economic or political as deduced from the information given, based on the standard and the information in hand 30 billion dollars cannot be decided upon as the fair value. c) The triple bottom line accounting or 3BL as it is also called is a financial reporting approach which is gaining prominence in recent times. It can be called a new age approach to accounting which not only seeks to measure the financial performance of a company through conventional variables such as revenues. profits and earnings per share but also seeks to measure a companys performance across aspects other than profit. Sustainability in operations and social existence have been agreed upon by industry experts as key parameters that will define success of organisations in the new millennium. Hence the triple bottom line accounting measures three ps which are profit planet and people. It is aptly summed up as a concerted effort to incorporate social, economic and environmental considerations into a companys evaluation and its decision making processes. (Wang Lin, 2007) Review of financial performance and operations are what a company normally publishes in their annual reports but of late companies have taken to make their stake holders aware of the initiatives undertaken by them other than the prescribed operations. A lot of companies in fact publish sustainability reports other than their annual reports. For any company triple bottom line accounting comes with its share of pros and cons. And the same is applicable for KGC Ltd. as well. KGC can communicate to their stake holders by the means of their sustainability reports the initiatives they have undertaken and the positive impact their presence has had on the people living in the Star Mountains Range and the people employed with them. The given information clearly mentions that they are a major employer of the region as well as provide a lot of facilities like schools, clean drinking water and others which go a long way in improving the life of the local population. It is widely believed and proven as well that stake holders have a feeling of pride in being associated with a socially relevant and aware organisation. Even the employees have a sense of pride in being associated with a company who is doing good for the society. It raises the reputation of the organisation and there is enough academic research which corroborates that r eputation of a firm builds value. (Weber Shandwick, 2015) While their contribution to the lives of the inhabitants of the island is undeniable, the damage their presence is doing to the environment is also hard to cover up in spite of their claim that their presence in Star mountains does more good than harm to the inhabitants and the ecological system there. A typical sustainability report requires a company to report the environmental activities and investments they have undertaken in order to offset the harm from one of their primary activities. This especially is pertinent for oil and mining companies like KGC Ltd. The environmentalists are bound to be agitated by the environmental damage being done by KGC. The dumping of sludge into the pond which caused serious water and ground pollution and the asymmphetatic attitude of the manager after the occurrence are something which would be very difficult to cover up for KGC. Until this point while KGC was not performing on the planet front they were at least performing on the people front. However, what this spill did was cause harm to the people as well because the pond they polluted was the only water source for two villages for purposes such as farming, drinking and hunt. A different point of view of looking at things would be that adopting triple bottom line accounting would give KGC Ltd. an opportunity to communicate to these groups if they have under taken any initiatives to lessen the damage caused by them. In that sense triple bottom line accounting becomes a damage control mechanism. d) Legitimacy is how a company gains the approval of the various stake holder groups by acting in a manner which is accordance within some socially constructed system of norms, values, beliefs, and definitions.(Suchman, 1995) All the organisation are continuously striving for legitimacy in a bid to remain sustainable.(Tilling, 2010) Legitimacy theory has been discussed upon in academic research as the main driving force behind voluntary social disclosures. It is important here to address the question as to why the companies strive for legitimacy. It can be answered by the argument that every organisation needs to maintain legitimacy in the eyes of major stake holder groups in order to be competitive and survive since a legitimacy in the eyes of various stake holder groups ensures flow of capital, customers and labour availability all of which constitute what is a must for any organisation to sustain its operations. Just like for any company for KGC too maintaining legitimacy is essential and the Australian people, the land owners and the PNG government are the most important stake holder groups in whose eyes they would always want to maintain their legitimacy. Should any stake holder group withdraw their support it would become difficult for KGC to sustain its operations. e) Right now KGC is at a juncture where it faces legitimacy issues with the various stake holder groups. Because they are operating in an ecologically and socio politically sensitive environment they were always vulnerable to scrutiny from environmental groups and socially conscious investor groups but with the recent incident where their gross carelessness has led to tremendous damage to the environment and well-being of the people their legitimacy has come under further stress from all quarters. The legitimacy is essential for KGC in case of all stake holder groups particularly, the media as it is them who shape the reactions of other stake holder groups as well. The increased role of media in establishing the legitimacy of a firm has been acknowledged in the academic world.(Tilling, 2010) The dumping of ore waste or sludge into the waste has led to a hue and cry among the Australian people who now believe KGC to be environmentally un responsible. Should they lose legitimacy in the eyes of the Australian people they might not find the adequate funding required to sustain or expand their operations. If they lose legitimacy the socially conscious shareholders might start selling their stocks which might lead to loss in market capitalization and devaluation of the company since they are listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. There are several instances in corporate history where a company has had to lose share holder confidence when its less than desirable business practices came in the eye of shareholders. Should the land owners start considering the company as no longer legitimate they might reconsider the leasing of the land and would want to take back the land. The socio political environment within the region also need to be keep in context. It is mentioned that the police actions by the Indonesian army may spill into the PNG portion of the Star Mountain Range. In wake of such circumstances KGC would want protection from the PNG government which it might not have access should they further lose legitimacy in the eyes of the PNG Government. Hence as explained in the previous paragraphs for a company to attract resources necessary for its survival legitimacy is essential and if it does legitimacy, the survival becomes extremely difficult f) The dumping of the sludge has led to the loss of legitimacy of KGC in the eyes of the various stake holder groups which include the Australian people and the local land holders respectively. In the aftermath of the incident the irresponsible comments made by the manager of the mines came across as highly in sensitive and damaged the reputation and consequently the legitimacy even more so. For damage control KGC has to indulge in image restoration activities which would involve restoring image by use of symbols. When an organisation loses legitimacy they want to pacify shareholders through communication of messages or through actions in a bid to lessen their distrust for the company. The tone of these messages can have a tone which could range from apologetic to intimidatory. (Zaremba, 2014) For KCG the right way forward would be as described above and what tone they chose to communicate their message is highly critical. Communication would be such that it reflects the companies and the managements sincerity and remorse for their actions rather than of denial and indifference. In that sense the statement issued by their manager might have been a step in the right direction had it been different in its tone and approach. Instead what it did was to further the damage as the statements such as dilution is the solution to pollution and at sea the sludge will be highly diluted were considered insensitive and indifferent by the various stake holder groups and reflected quite the opposite of what it should have reflected. The correct way would be to issue a sincere apology and make sure that the stake holder groups are made aware of the initiatives being undertaken by the company to correct its mistakes. Stakeholder theory in its basic form suggests that a firm must seek to maximise profits and the welfare of the stock holder subject to social or moral constraints. (Freeman, 1998) Then there is a stake holder theory which stresses that a major objective of the firm [is] to attain the ability to balance conflicting demands of various stakeholders in the firm. (Laan, 2009) Whenever a company makes voluntary disclosures they are seen as mechanisms to gain legitimacy. As Laan (2009) rightly points out any organisation including KGC faces a paradox as to which stake holder group it places higher in its hierarchy of perceived importance. Here KGC can chose to manipulate what image they want to build based on which stake holder group they want to appease more. g) The cost that KGC might incur to clear the damages arising from the sludge spill is uncertain at this time. Subject to a pending lawsuit in an Australian court, damages can range from 6 billion to 60 billion AUD. Reporting for an environmental liability reporting is an area which is highly judgemental and comes with its share of pitfalls, traps and nuances.(PriceWaterhouse Coopers, 2014) One way through which KGC can record the cost of harm done through sludge spill is by recognising it as contingent liability and creating a provision for it. Since the range is very broad it would be better to take a value which is in between. The net effect on the financial statements would be that the decided upon value would be deducted from the income statement as an expense possibly under the head environmental damage account and will feature on the balance sheet under non-current liabilities as estimated liability. The second method through which KGC can record the cost of harm done is by ac tually spending the amount in the rehabilitation of the surrounding area without waiting on the verdict of the lawsuit and actually classifying the money spent as an operating expense.(Ernst and Young, 2010) Accounting for environmental damages as already explained is an area where company gets judged and hence KGC already under scrutiny must be careful in choosing the method which improves their image would be a better choice. From the companys profitability point of view, the first method is better as the company can wait for the verdict and instead chose to do do nothing, however that would further prove damaging to their already suffering reputation. The second method involves cash flow and would result in probable short term losses but would enhance companys reputation proving to be a damage control mechanism. As explained earlier it would be a positive image building exercise thereby enhancing their legitimacy as well which has already been established as essential for a companys survival. Eisenhower Administration essays

Eisenhower Administration essays What role did the Eisenhower administration play in Civil Rights? During the 1950s race relations in the United States began to explode and the domestic tranquility caused years of injustice for African Americans. Eisenhower, the current president, entered office committed to Civil Rights in principle, and he pushed the issue in areas of federal authority. During Eisenhowers early years of office the public services in Washington were desegregated. But, beyond these two ideas of the Presidents philosophy inhibited vigorous action in enforcing the principle of Civil Rights. The first was his preference for state or local action over federal involvement, and second his doubt that laws could change racial attitudes. One famous case during this time Brown vs. Board of Education. Chief Justice Earl Warren handed down the doctrine that separate but equal in schools has no place. A year later the Court directed a full start toward compliance with Warrens doctrine. Eisenhower refused to take any part in leading white southerners toward complianc e. He felt the Courts decision set back progress at least fifteen years. Despite the fact Eisenhower wanted no part in desegregating schools, he did push for blacks the right to vote. He passed the first Civil Rights law passed since the Reconstruction. But, the irony of the situation showed that still in 1959 the Civil Rights Act still had not added a single southern black to voting rolls. Another incident that occurred during Eisenhowers Civil Rights role was the desegregation in Little Rocks Central High School. The principal called the National Guard in to prevent nine black students from entering after the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Eisenhower ordered paratroopers to protect the students and placed the National Guard on federal service the entire school year. ...

Pros and Cons of Telecommuting Pros and Cons of Telecommuting Pros and Cons of Telecommuting By Colin Telecommute (verb): to work from home, communicating with a central workplace using equipment such as telephones, fax machines, and modems. Telecommute; the word sounds as though it opposes the freedom that a freelance writing life should bring, and is therefore in no way desirable. But in an age when technology and e-commerce is being embraced by so many organisations, the word ‘telecommute’ has come to represent the key to a door of opportunity for freelance writers, more than any other word in the English dictionary before it. But like anything else in this world that sounds good, how much of that should be taken with a pinch of salt? Everything has a cost, so let’s take a look at the pros and cons, from a freelance writer’s perspective, of telecommuting. Pros Anywhere, Anytime Look at the word closely, and immediately you will begin to see what it has going for it. Tele – commute: the ability to â€Å"commute† anywhere in the world, without actually leaving the comfort of your own home. In other words, the world truly is your oyster. Being able to work for any company, anywhere in the world, opens up opportunities for freelance writers that were never dreamt of prior to the birth of the Internet. Effectively, it means that there are no longer any barriers to who can work for whom, and thanks to e-mail, communication between the employer and the employee is faster than it has ever been. Telecommuting cuts out the need for work permits, and gives employers a much wider scope to choose from, as they are no longer restricted geographically over whom they hire. Skill and talent alone, can once again be a major factor. Travel and the Environment Not owning a car – for whatever reason is no longer a barrier to being able to earn money. As a telecommuter, the only thing you need to get started is a PC, an Internet connection, a desk, a chair, and the motivation. If you are a believer in environmental causes, then telecommuting can allow you to earn while doing your bit for the environment. Global warming is a benefactor of telecommuting! Determine Your Own Schedule Freelance writing already allows you to determine your own working schedule. In the world of telecommuting, there is no such thing as 9 to 5. If you have a young family this can be of huge benefit, in that you can organise work around child care requirements, and shopping trips to purchase necessities. It’s also a huge benefit when dealing with companies on the other side of the world. For example, if a freelance writer in the U.K. gets contracted to a company in California, the time difference is negated because he can keep in touch through email. Cons Alienation Telecommuting means working from home can be as flexible as the freelance writer desires, but it also means the more jobs he gets from overseas, the more he can feel alienated on a much grander scale. We all know that writing is a solitary business, but when you are telecommuting on a global scale, the feeling that your home office is a small place to work is magnified to a much greater extent. It is therefore vital for all telecommuters to make sure they get plenty of vacation time and contact with the outside world. Sanity is a treasured commodity. Communication Dealing with clients in a telecommuting situation, also puts the freelance writer at risk of severe frustration if they are required to work with other writers on a project, especially if they are also spread around the world. Having no face to face contact with your client or team can often make the freelance writer feel vulnerable, because without the personal aspect, one mistake could be enough to see you dropped at the click of a button. Being on the other side of the planet to your client also means that although email is generally fast and reliable, there is always the scope that emails may be misinterpreted. For example, while you could read your brief in the wrong way and submit the wrong article, it also means your client may take something you say in entirely the wrong way, and end up being offended. Neither scenario is good if a long-term working relationship is at stake. Exchange Rates A freelance writer telecommuting for an overseas company that pays in a currency weaker than their home country, can be prone to feeling that money is being lost. For example, a freelance writer in the U.K. who earns $200 USD for a commissioned article, will receive around  £100 at the current exchange rate. It is therefore important to ensure you feel you are being paid fairly for the work you are required to submit. Technology Telecommuting means there is a heavy reliance placed on technology for all manners of things. These can range from merely keeping in touch with a client, to making submissions, look for work, and accepting payment. Suffer a PC crash or lose your interconnection, and you may as well be sitting on a raft in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is therefore vital that every telecommuter serious about their business, takes all precautions necessary to keep their PC and peripherals fully protected. The most vital things to remember are to have sufficient anti-virus protection software, good malware and adware scanning and removal software, a suitable firewall installation, and to take regular backups of all your data and software. It might also be a good measure to ensure your PC is regularly maintained, especially the hard drive, and that you never forget to pay your ISP bills. The decision to work in a telecommuting capacity can open doors to the most varied and exciting work a freelance writer can possibly imagine. Try it out; if you don’t like it, it costs nothing to stop – possibly the final pro of telecommuting. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Statistics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4750 words

Statistics - Essay Example According to basic probability we divide the figure of favourable outcomes by the total number of possible outcomes in our sample space. If we're observing for the chance it will rain, this will be the number of days in our record that it rained divided by the total number of similar days in our record. If our meteorologist has data for 100 days with similar weather conditions, and on 80 of these days it rained (a favourable outcome), the probability of rain on the next similar day is 80/100 or 80%. In view of the fact that a 50% probability means that an experience is as likely to happen as not, 80%, which is greater than 50%, means that it is more likely to rain than not. But what is the probability that it won't rain Keep in mind that because the favourable outcomes represent all the possible ways that an event can occur, the sum of the different probabilities must equal 1 or 100%, so 100% - 80% = 20%, and the probability that it won't rain is 20%. The following scatter plot with a fitted line shows that there is a positive relationship b/w selected 15 student's maths and science scores. ... represent all the possible ways that an event can occur, the sum of the different probabilities must equal 1 or 100%, so 100% - 80% = 20%, and the probability that it won't rain is 20%. 2. Scatter graph of the maths and science scores with best fitted line The following scatter plot with a fitted line shows that there is a positive relationship b/w selected 15 student's maths and science scores. Part 2b will be the evidence to prove this hypothesis that student's math scores will be positively related to their science scores. Correlation coefficient (r = + 0.936) this magnitude shows that it's highly correlated and the positive sign shows that there is a positive correlation between the variables. So we conclude that as one variable increases other one will also increases. b. Comment on the position of the line of best fit and any correlation between the scores. Although one objective of correlation is a line fitted to the data, this line is not used to predict an unknown value of one variable when given a value of the other variable; it simply shows the relationship between the two variables. This best-fit line is the one that minimizes the sum of squared deviations between the points and the line, measured vertically (along the Y axis). The Bivariate Correlations procedure computes Pearson's correlation coefficient. Correlations measure how variables or rank orders are related. Before calculating a correlation coefficient, screen your data for outliers (which can cause misleading results) and evidence of a linear relationship. Pearson's

Emerging influences in the United States healthcare system Essay

Emerging influences in the United States healthcare system - Essay Example re organizations influence trends in service delivery since every other organization combines business strategies that help in the best performance of the institution (Bowden & Smits, 2012). This paper attempts to analyse to what extent workforce tsunami, Hospital Acquired Conditions policies and Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award system influences current trends in the United States healthcare system. It is evident that there are a lot of skills that the old workers in America have accumulated over time; but in the next ten years or so, this story may hit the economical headlines and human interest. People talk about age as just being a number, but at the same time I think this saying should only work best during birthdays because aging as far as the American workforce is generally concerned is becoming an economic threat. This factor, generally referred to as the workforce tsunami, cuts across all businesses and workplaces, including the human healthcare facilities. These facilities invest so much in the old, trusting them for their long term experience without considering the fact that a time will come when most of these old employees will pass on. This occurrence will have the risk of greatly affecting the American workplaces and facilities in the healthcare system may lack workers for an unknown period before the right experts are obtained to replace the aging and perishing g eneration. This basically will have a potential detrimental impact on the lives of Americans, especially those in their sick beds during such an unfortunate occurrence (Laing eta al., 2009). Realistically and evidenced by statistical data, it is expected that about 10,000 baby boomers will continue turning to that age of sixty five years every year until we get to 2030. A more realist observation is that about a quarter of a million of all Americans find themselves celebrating sixty five years of age on monthly basis. Looking at these figures may not indicate a great impact, but the

Gun Control Problems and Solutions Essay -- Constituton Bill Rights Ri

The problem with guns is fairly obvious: they decrease the difficulty of killing or injuring a person. In Jeffrey A. Roth's Firearms and Violence (NIJ Research in Brief, February 1994), he points out the obvious dangers. About 60 percent of all murder victims in the United States in 1989 (about 12,000 people) were killed with firearms. Firearm attacks injured another 70,000 victims, some of whom were left permanently disabled. In 1985, the cost of shootings was an estimated $14 billion nationwide for medical care, long-term disability, and premature death. In robberies and assaults, victims are far more likely to die when the perpetrator is armed with a gun than when he or she has another weapon or is unarmed. I believe that there are a few solutions that can be used to solve this problem at both a community and national level. The first course of action is to establish a national system for registering guns and ammunition. Anyone can obtain a gun by going to a state with less restrictive laws or by getting a friend who lives in the state to buy the guns for them. A national system would prevent this by scaring those "friends" into not buying the guns legally and selling them illegally, for if the guns are used in an illegal crime, that person can be held accountable. Secondly, a national system would be more helpful in tracking crimes after they have happened, to bring the perpetrators to justice. Instant background checks, on people attempting to buy... Revolutionary History Essay

Between 1765 and 1788, the revolution that established the United States of America transpired. This revolution arose, because the power of the British Parliament to directly impose taxes on the American colonies was disputed by the latter. This revolution resulted in the establishment of a large republic and served to disprove the theory of political thinkers that republicanism could not govern over a country that was large. In this manner the state and federal constitutions that were adopted in the period from 1776 to 1788, represented the foremost political aspirations of that age. Another effect of this permanent republicanism was that monarchies became obsolete over a period of time (American Revolution. The Crystal Reference Encyclopedia. CredoReference). This revolution, which was democratic in nature, established the principle of equal rights in the US. This was due in great measure to the efforts of farmers and artisans. The extent to which these people favored freedom can be estimated from the fact that they took over the reins of government in the states of Pennsylvania and Vermont. Subsequently, in 1777, these states disassociated themselves from New York, in order to implement institutions that were significantly democratic. Moreover, social change was engendered by this revolution, in as much as slavery was transformed into a political and moral issue from what had been a well established reality. In the Northern states slavery became extinct and in northern portion of the South, the number of blacks who were no longer slaves increased dramatically (American Revolution. The Crystal Reference Encyclopedia. CredoReference). The French Revolution demolished the Bourbon monarchy and the ancien rà ©gime. It commenced with an insurrection by the nobility against projected financial reforms in the year 1787. Subsequently, the middle classes participated in this revolt. The National Assembly supplanted the Estates – General and it published the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen. After this the working classes of Paris took control of the Bastille in July 1789. In 1791, the royal family was incarcerated for making plans to stage a counter revolution. The nations of Europe became unsettled due to these developments in France and this resulted in the French Revolutionary Wars. In 1793, King Louis XVI was decapitated by means of the guillotine. The existence of various political factions resulted in the Terror, which lasted from 1793 to 1794. During this period, around two hundred thousand people were detained and around fifteen thousand people were put to death (French Revolution. Andromeda Encyclopedic Dictionary of World History. CredoReference). The French Revolution, which started in the 1789, brought to an end the monarchy that had been in existence for a thousand years. After the King had been deposed, the government was controlled by Robespierre and others of his ilk. They executed a large number of people and in this manner unleashed considerable terror. Subsequently, Robespierre was himself executed and control passed to the Directory. This proved to be an incompetent and corrupt body, which permitted Napoleon Bonaparte to seize power in France and ultimately become its Emperor. The French Revolution was officially ended when Napoleon declared himself to be the Emperor of France (French Revolution. The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy. Houghton Mifflin). This was a prolonged struggle in Mexico that followed the deposition of Porfirio Dà az. He was a dictator who ensured that power was concentrated in the hands of a few and who supported the elite. Leaders like Francisco Madero, Pancho Villa, Pascual Orozco, and Emiliano Zapata collected a large number of supporters. Subsequently, in 1911, Madero was made the president of Mexico. However, his reforms were not executed quickly and this caused both his former allies and foes to oppose him. He was executed by Victoriano Huerta, who became the dictator of Mexico. However, Huerta a drunken despot was overthrown by the machinations of Villa, Carranza and Obregà ³n and Carranza became the president in the year 1914. Since, Villa was not agreeable to this, considerable bloodshed ensued. Carranza ensured that a liberal constitution was written and adopted in 1917. He had Zapata, a popular peasant leader, ambushed and killed. This led to a popular revolt against Carranza, who was killed while attempting to flee Mexico City. The fierce fighting almost came to an end after Obregà ³n came to power. However, a few clashes continued to take place and the revolutionary period ended only in 1934 when Là ¡zaro Cà ¡rdenas came to power (Mexican Revolution. Britannica Concise Encyclopedia). The American Revolution resulted in an independent United States of America, whereas the French Revolution put an end to its own national government. The American Revolution influenced the French people with the ideas of freedom and independence. The visits of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson to France in the 1780s uplifted the spirits of the French people with new hopes for independence from tyranny. King Louis XVI supported the American Revolution that commenced in 1776 and encouraged the American colonies in their fight against the British in order to obtain independence. The King, however, failed to anticipate that he was ushering in his own downfall. The effects of both the American Revolution and the French Revolution changed the course of the history in such a way that absolute monarchies were unable to survive in many European countries, which were replaced peacefully with republics and democracies (American Revolution vs. French Revolution). The French Revolution became highly appealing to other nations due to the straightforwardness and universality of its objectives. Many people were inspired and convinced by the concepts of â€Å"Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity† that had been basis of the French Revolution. The only unresolved issues related to the interpretation and application of these concepts to the social and political milieu. This solution to this problem was provided by Karl Marx in his Das Capital, in whose opinion the French Revolution had not been taken to its logical conclusion and was therefore incomplete. His contention was that though freedom had been obtained, workers had been exploited and deprived of property. The benefits that had arisen due to the French Revolution had failed to uplift society as a whole. Karl Marx believed that the emancipation of the society in its totality was possible only if there was a socialist or communist revolution, which would eradicate private property and form a cooperative of producers. During the last stage of this transformation the state would wither away as it would cease to have any purpose. This final stage of Marx’s theory was similar to that of the anarchists of France, Italy, Russia and Spain (The Revolutionary Idea in the Modern World). The French revolution had a profound influence on the subsequent nationalist movements and some of these were the 1821 Greek Independence movement, the endeavour to bring about modernization in Egypt by Muhammed Ali and in the Ottoman Empire by Selim III and Mahmut II. Several social uprisings of the 1968s had also been inspired by the French Revolution. Moreover, the French Revolution affected the thinking of future generations by enabling them to accept change as normal and had a cohesive effect on the masses in process of building the state (Robinson). The Mexican Revolution was a success in the class of anti – state rebellions. It dethroned the Diaz regime and extinguished the caudillismo of Huerta and Carranza. It marked a milestone in the history of popular revolutions and popular sovereignty in under developed nations. This revolution demonstrated that revolutions by native peoples could emerge victorious. It paved the way for the subsequent revolutions against state authorities including both violent and nonviolent rebellion. Most of the Latin American governments adopted the principles raised in the Mexican constitutional principle of no re – eleccion. This constitutional principle had not been subjected to any attempt to amend or repeal it by any of the Mexican leaders, subsequent to the assassination of Alvaro Obregon in 1928 (Mexican Revolution). The principles of the revolution were debated by the political and academic scholars in and out of Mexico. The events, participants and the consequences of the Revolution were documented by many foreign authors. For instance, John Womack had written Zapata and the Mexican Revolution, and Friedrich Katz wrote Life and Times of Pancho Villa. These works narrated a lengthy and well documented report of the events of the Revolution. Moreover, the aftereffects and the events of the Mexican Revolution continue to influence Mexican politics as well as international policies (Mexican Revolution). The first half of the twentieth century was witness to changes in the Mexican government that were similar to that of the French Revolution. Every revolution consists of four stages and in the preliminary stage both Mexico and France faced problems that were reflected in the future. These problems were due to the extant leadership. After this preliminary stage there occurs the second stage consisting of frequent rebellions against the government. Subsequently, the revolution enters the third stage, which is characterized by a great deal of turbulence and can therefore be termed as the crisis stage. There were several instances when bloodshed and chaos prevailed during this crisis stage. The final stage is that of recovery and in this stage the governments consent to implement the plans and measures that would engender changes that would benefit the people. The preliminary stages of the Mexican and French Revolutions were the same. The Mexican president, Porifirio Diaz had been a successful President of Mexico for over three decades. He ruled the country in a manner that was similar to that in which Louis XVI had ruled France. In Mexico power was concentrated in the hands of a few people who had access to the President. The rest of the citizens did not have a voice or the right to vote for the officials they favored. There was no right to expression and there existed sanctions, which were similar to those obtaining in the Ancien Regime in France. These terrible conditions prevailed in the country and wealth was concentrated in the hands of a few. Furthermore, injustice was the order of the day and there was no law and order in either the cities or the countryside (The Mexican Revolution). In addition, there were a number of differences, for instance the French monarchs of the Ancien Regime had been absolutist monarchs and their ruling power had been centralized. President Porifirio Diaz ruled the nation as a dictator and it was often stated that the President had the best intentions for the future of Mexico. He was concerned with establishing a stable government and in order to achieve that objective he ensured that the training program for military and police personnel had been thoroughly changed in such a way that both those forces gained in power and strength. The French Revolution was better known for the problems that the different classes had with each other. The people of the upper class had been distressed due to the fact that they had lost power during the reign of Luis XIV and the people of the middle class were disgruntled due to the fact that some of the members of their class were becoming wealthier but were not permitted to hold noble titles. Workers of the urban areas were convinced that they were being ill treated and this belief lasted throughout the duration of the Revolution. France went to war with England in support of the Americans and this clearly indicated the incompetence of the rule of Louis XIV. The war served to severely deplete France of its resources and the Revolution was in the offing. Louis XIV was not in a position to control the revolution (Wasserman). The similarities of the Mexican Revolution and the French Revolution are further elicited during the crisis stage. There was a civil war in both the countries and in Mexico, there were opposing parties of Obregon and Carranza against Villa and Zapata. In France, there was a constant strife between the citizens throughout the country and particularly in the Vendee. The main objectives of these various groups were fulfilled in these revolutions. The people of Mexico sought equality, rights and a republic government similar to that of the United States. In France, the people wanted a systematic well – structured republic having no monarch. Both Mexico and France were able to achieve their desired goals. However, France was able to attain its objective in the crisis stage, but Mexico had to wait till the end of the revolution to achieve its desired goal. Thus these nations resemble each other to the extent of attaining their aims. The aftereffects of the Mexican Revolution and the French Revolution continue to influence the people even today. The Mexican Constitution, which was written in the year 1917, has remained unchanged till today. The Mexican Revolution can be considered as a revolution that had taken place in a developing nation and it has served as an inspiration to revolutions in the third world. The French Revolution left its mark due to the Declaration of the Rights of Man, which protects the fundamental rights of the citizens and these rights are still in vogue in France. The chief difference between these two revolutions was that Mexico was able to retain its republican government after the revolution, while France went into a dictatorship and then a monarchal form of government after the end of the revolution. At present, Mexico is a constitutional republic supported by its Constitution. Mexico has a president and a legislative branch and a governmental system that is stable. In contrast, the constitution of France was changed several times and the governmental system of France has a president and a parliament. In this aspect it resembles the system of governance of the United States. The fundamental aim of the French Revolution was the formation of a constitutional monarch similar to that of England. The main similarities between these two revolutions were that they both had an objective that was fought for and duly achieved. The French Revolution, the American Revolution and the Mexican Revolution were fought in order to attain freedom and justice. The United States sought freedom from the British rule, while France fought for dethroning a government under which the rich people tyrannized the poor and in order to obtain freedom from monarchal ruling. In Mexico, people sought freedom from the Diaz’s Oligarchy. However, a number of differences existed in respect of the causes of these revolutions due to the fact that the leaders subscribed to different opinions. The French Revolution commenced with a bloody attack on the Bastille, which represented the hated power of the aristocracy. The American Revolution, on the other hand, was conducted in a phased and well regulated manner. The Americans first engaged in negotiations with England and on these negotiations being rejected by the latter, the Americans decided to declare independence from the British. Since, England did not accept this declaration of independence by the colonies, the American Revolution began in right earnest (Nosotro). The Mexican Revolution started with a mass uprising against Diaz, who fled to Spain. However, this was revolution entailed a lot of bloodshed and treachery. The reason for the American, French and Mexican revolutions was that the people sought to obtain freedom from tyranny. These revolutions left a significant influence on history. The United States explored all other avenues, prior to embarking on a war with the British. The French Revolution on the other hand began as a mass movement and created terror and panic due to the large number of executions, moreover, it was characterized by rampaging mobs (Nosotro). In this respect the reign of terror unleashed by Robespierre attained considerable notoriety. The Mexican Revolution was targeted at the elite, who had assigned all the power to themselves. The poor of Mexico wanted land and an escape from poverty. Popular and legendary leaders like Zapata promised to obtain land for the poor peasants. The American Revolution destroyed the attitude of respect for social superiors and constituted authority. American society remained structurally unchanged due to this revolution. All the same, the false belief that disobedience to authority was disobedience to God was dispelled by the revolution. The public increasingly started to believe that rulers should serve the people rather than behave as their masters. This resulted in the establishment of a new social order in which persons with authority were chosen on the basis of merit and not on the basis of prestige, social status or wealth. Moreover, such elected persons would have to comply with the will of the people rather than demand the unquestioning loyalty of the public. The French Revolution served as an inspiration for several other revolutions like those that occurred in South America. It is very important due to the fact that the new ideas regarding freedom that originated in this revolution were disseminated all over Europe. The message that it conveyed to the world was that even in the absence of a well planned strategy, it was possible for a popular uprising to depose the extant authorities. It brought about the establishment of the precedents to democratic institutions, representative governments and constitutions. The Mexican Revolution brought about the transition from a dictatorship to a democratic system that had less foreign control, better living conditions for its citizens, labor reforms and economic and social reforms. The objective of these revolutions was to secure liberty from tyrannical authorities. While the American Revolution resulted in the establishment of United States of America, the French Revolution resulted in the overthrow of the Bourbon monarchy and the Mexican Revolution brought about an end to the Oligarchic rule and engendered far reaching land reforms that improved the living condition of the Mexican peasants. William Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet - 2041 Words

3 On the good side though Romeo and Juliet love at first sight could seem to be true and sincere. Firstly, unlike with Rosaline, both are involved and seem to really love each other. Secondly the language they use about each other is very intense and beautiful, for example when Romeo starts to talk about his lips as pilgrims and her body as a shrine. He want to wipe away the sin of touching the shrine with his hand by using his lips instead, referred to as â€Å"two blushing pilgrims†. She replies like a well behaved girl by saying that his hand is good but his lips are too much, even though she wants him and agreed to the hand: â€Å"Good sir you do wrong your hand too much†. These images of pilgrims and shrines are religious, and religious†¦show more content†¦The tragedy and the deaths of the two lovers caused by their loving going against their parents and the society their parent represent. There is the historical sense which the audience of Shakespeare time knew, but also the modem audience for example Asians would relate to. Firstly the idea of love was not accepted in the 16th centre by most people. It was actually seen as an illness as for example when Romeo’s father, Montague, uses the word cure in a medical way about Romeo’s feeling for Rosaline: â€Å"Could we but learn from whence his sorrows grow, We would as willingly give cure as know.† Secondly children relationships were strictly controlled by the parents especially for marriage. They had good reason because marriageable age was as young as fourteen (year 9 now a days) which according to Lady Capulet is already old enough to be having children: â€Å"Younger than you Here in Verona, ladies of

Essay on The Genocides of the 20th Century - 1517 Words

The genocides of the 20th century which occurred in Rwanda and Germany had striking similarities, something that should have alerted the world to stop them. At the core of these two massacres, patterns existed that outlined how similar thinking and reasoning could lead to something as horrible as these two events. One can see how both groups used their command of knowledge as a way to control the people, how the rest of the world refused to step up to stop the killings, and how the people were thought of as less than humans to provide a just cause for such terrible acts. In both cases of genocide, the killings were done as a way to ‘cleanse’ the population; they both resulted from a political power rising up and wishing to kill off†¦show more content†¦Stopping this flow of information differs; in Rwanda a simple radio jammer could have been used, but in Nazi Germany the press was under complete control of the Nazi Party. In each case, however, the world ref used to step up and try to stop the evils. The idea that other races were sub-human allowed the political parties to convince common people that the mass killing of these groups would be beneficial to the state itself. Both genocides relied on rallying people against other races, people groups, or tribes. People would only be okay with and support mass killings if they believed the victims were not the same as them, if their humanity had been taken from them. Political groups could only do this through controlling the flow of knowledge which reached the citizens. This persuasive control of knowledge and press to achieve a goal is known as propaganda. â€Å"Propaganda is the art of persuasion - persuading others that your side of the story is correct. A Review On The Minds Of Ceo - 1112 Words

Straight from the CEO A Review of the Literature The minds of CEO s are, in aggregate, a tremendous center of power in society. Upon these minds - how they tick, how they prioritize, how they view the vectors of change depends on the transmission of know-how, technology, capital, and jobs. In addition, as globalization increases, the socioeconomic impact of their thoughts becomes all the greater . This provides a broad cross sample of the global CEO population. Insightful interviews have been collected, which contain lessons from both the brawny companies that have been forced to reinvent themselves, as well as from some of the brainy upstarts that needed to be rather unconventional to gain access to the global playing field. CEO s of top world corporations tell how they handle globalization, customer service, motivation, leadership and other management issues. The correct citation of The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 is Public Law No. 109-8, 119. It became fully effective last October 17, 2005. We will write a custom essay sample on Coursework on Business Law or any similar topic only for you Order Now The law implements the new â€Å"means test† to determine whether a debtor is eligible for liquidation which is found in chapter 7 or must file under wage-earner repayment plan found in chapter 13. In order to protect the interests of employees and for reasons of public interest, the law also set supervising random audits and targeted audits to determine whether a liquidation and debtor’s bankruptcy documents are accurate (The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005, 2009, p. 1). It is true that businesses sometimes use bankruptcy as a means to address labor issues which includes reformed contract with the union. The same is true with the case of United Airline Company when it had merger proceedings with US Airways, wherein several union members complained. The labor union is composed of the United Flight Attendants wherein its members fought for about 29 days to bring up the pilot’s contract dispute (AFA Announces United Flight Attendants Elect Militant Leadership, 2008, p. 1). The contract being fought for becomes successful due to the efforts of union members. Mr. Gardner violated the law. The notice of garnishment on the wages of Clarence Ellis has nothing to do with his job in the company. It was a legal process wherein any person or entity with whom Mr. Ellis was indebted, may take his wages or money in the bank as payment. However, it was not related to the job of Mr. Ellis as laborer and carpenter. Hence, the grounds for firing him such as alcoholism, poor job performance, insubordination, and dishonesty being used by Mr. Gardner are not applicable. Therefore, Mr. Gardner’s act of firing Mr. Ellis is baseless. References CBS Interactive Inc. 4 April 2008. AFA Announces United Flight Attendants Elect MilitantLeadership. Financial Analysis Cambridge University -Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Financial Analysis Cambridge University? Answer: Introduction In the modern world, each and every company that operates in the economy has the main aim of earning the maximum amount of profit from the market. The maintenance and the recording of the profit is possible by taking help of the mechanism of financial analysis. The financial analysis is helpful for the construction of the budget and the financial statement that is essential for the organization in expanding their business and maintaining competitive edge (Vogel 2014). The meaning of financial analysis is to assess the businesses projects, budgets and other financial data given out by the entity to ascertain the performance of the entity. Basically, it is done in order to explain on the on the liquidity of the firm, profitability and stability. In order to undertake comprehensive financial analysis, the organization requires to examine the income statement, balance sheet and the cash flow statement (Jensen 2013). In this statement, this paper would be explaining the financial analysis of the departmental income with respect to a hotel. In the next segment of the paper, an examination of the current pattern and the performance of the hotel and the data that is necessary in order to take an in-depth financial analysis and the steps that are needed by the management to enhance the overall functioning of the hotel. In the current case study, it is seen that the performance of the hotel is very weak. There is a huge difference in the budgeted sales of the hotel and the actual sales of the hotel. The beverage section and the food section sales are very low as anticipated. It is due to this factor that the hotel has been facing losses and on the other hand the management expenditure and the maintenance cost that is incurred day to day is higher in comparison to the budget. Therefore, the management of the hotel requires to have an effective balance among the expenditure and sales. Assessment of the current scenario The overall performance of company is very weak. By considering the income statement from 9th October 2016 - 5th November 2016 there has been a huge difference between the expectation and reality. The Budgeted Net Operating Profit of the hotel requires to be 201550 but in reality the hotel incurred a loss of -8880. Hence, there are lots of things that need to be improved and it can be explained in an effective manner. By looking at the revenue section, expected revenue was 838150 and in reality the hotel earned 664910. The maximum variance occurred has been due to food. The expected was 4392520 and actual earning was 332090 and then the big difference is in the variance beverages section. By observing the cost of goods sold, the budgeted cost of goods sold was 258700 and on the other hand the actual was 198300. The hotel saved a maximum cost in food that is -44650. Then by considering the gross profit data, the budgeted gross profit was 579450 and in actual the hotel earned 466610. T herefore there exists a difference of 112840. While discussing about the direct cost it is seen that the direct costs increases due other random direct cost. The budget for the other direct cost was 41360 which raised to 85270. Hence, the gross operating income incurred was 209120 and the budgeted income was 366120. There has been a huge difference of 157000. The maximum difference incurred was due to the rise in other direct costs. Thereafter, it is seen that the general expense was expected to be 111580 which raised to 166710. The hotel spends too much on administration cost and day to day maintenance costs. The overall administration cost that has been incurred by the hotel was 166710 and budgeted amount was 111580. Due to all the factors that have been explained above, it is seen that the hotel earned an operating loss of -8800 and expected profit was 201550. Therefore, there was a huge downfall in the performance of the hotel. By considering the cumulative budget it is seen that performance of the hotel is not only poor in the current time period but the overall performance of the company was very disappointing. There is a huge gap between the reality and the expectation. The expected net profit is 1963430 however the hotel earned a loss of -26800. The main factor for this has been due to the sale of food and beverages. Food, beverage and rooms are the major sources of revenue and the performance of food and beverage is not effective (Kou, Peng and Wang 2014). It is essential that the hotel should improve and develop the food quality and should concentrate on establishing an improved environment in order to attract existing and prospective customers and thereby should undertake effective marketing in order to promote and advertise the restaurant. Quantification and discussion of significant variances In this matter, this paper would explain the various significant variances are as follows: The main variance in revenue section has been the beverages and food; Particulars 2016 Cumulative Beverage -446200 Food -160430 -1750430 In cost of goods sold: Beverage -19500 -185740 Food -44650 -435790 In gross profit: Beverage -31650 -260460 Food -11570 -1314640 Direct Cost Other direct cost -43910 -362520 General expenses Administration -34380 Day to day maintenance cost -11640 -92220 Additional information required Financial analysis refers to the evaluation of the financial statements in order to ascertain the performance of the hotel. There are these 3 main mechanism with the help of which the financial statements are assessed. They have been explained below: Ratio analysis DuPont analysis Common size financial statements It is seen that ratio analysis has been found to be the most important financial analysis tool out of the three that has been named above. Financial analysis is undertaken in order to undertake a comparison and valuation of the hotel. Financial statements are utilized by different persons in various manner (Schmidt and Hunter 2014). For instance, top level management will use financial statements for the purpose of decision making thereby improving performance of the hotel and on the other hand the investor will use to undertake investment decision and the auditor will use financial statement to make sure that the statements are fair and true. Therefore, financial analysis is a very crucial exercise for any company to operate successfully. Ratio analysis: In order to draw significant insight into the financial statements, the ratio analysis is an important tool. The balance sheet and financial statement are a part of the financial statements. This assesses the financial statements by dividing certain number and figures to construct the ratios. The computation of the ratio is significant as one cannot draw conclusions by observing the financial statements (Hans et al. 2014). The ratio analysis enhances the usability of financial statement. The income statement explains the amount of net profit the hotel can earn but to evaluate whether it is sufficient or not would be judged by computing the ratio (Ott and Longnecker 2015). For instance, the net profit margin: net profit/sales is this ratio is compared to the industry ratio and in this manner a conclusion about the performance of the hotel can be understood. Profitability Ratios The main concern of the hotel has been to earn and to judge whether hotel has been able to make sufficient profit and one needs to calculate profitability ratio. There are two kinds of profitability ratios namely: Profit margins: It is done to compare profitability at various stages by taking help of the gross profit and net profit margins. Rate of return ratios: These ratios include return on assets, return on equity, earning power etc. Liquidity Ratios These ratios are calculated to in order to assess the liquidity position of the hotel. Liquidity explains that the hotel has been able able to meet their obligations on time (Glasserman 2013). For any firm or entity, it is very important to have sound liquidity or else the entity might face trouble. Liquidity ratios are namely: Current ratio Acid test ratio Quick ratio Cash ratio Capital Structure Ratios / Leverage Ratios The leverage means the firm is making use of their debt in its capital structure. For any firm it is difficult to function the business without debt. There are two kinds of liquidity ratio: Capital structure ratio: These ratios are used to calculate the risk of the company for bankruptcy. these ratios include: Debt equity ratio Debt asset ratio Coverage ratios: This ratio determines the capacity of the company to meet its future debt obligations on time. These ratios are: Interest coverage ratio Fixed coverage ratio Debt service coverage ratio Activity / Efficiency / Turnover Ratios These are even known as the asset management ratio or efficiency ratio. A company is having assets in order to generate sales. Therefore, this ratio determines the amount of asset utilization to convert or generate sales. These ratios are: Inventory turnover Average collection period Receivables turnover Fixed assets turnover Total asset turnover Growth Ratios These ratio calculates the growth of the firm. The fixed asset investment, retention ratio and profit margins and the factors that aids the firm to grow and develop (Abrahamsson et al. 2017). It is said that company will experience better growth if external financing is used. Valuation Ratios The valuation ratios are used to compute the market price of the hotel. These ratios are: Earnings ratio, Dividend yield DuPont Analysis DuPont analysis is a process of measurement of the performance that was incorporated by DuPont Corporation in the year 1920. With the help of this process, the assets are computed at their gross book value and not in their net book value in order to produce an increased return on equity. It has been known as DuPont identity (Isard et al. 2017). With respect to the DuPont analysis, it is seen that the return on equity is affected by three objects namely the operating efficiency, which is computed with the help of the profit margin, asset use efficiency that is measured by the total asset turnover and the financial leverage which is computed by the equity multiplier. This process is helpful for the determination of the return on the equity and the factors that are responsible for the transformations in the return on equity. Therefore, the financial statements of the hotel can be computed with the help of which the stakeholders can undertake their decisions accordingly. It is seen that computing the assets at the gross book value eliminates the incentives in order to restrict investing in the new assets. Making use of the book values in opposition to the financial accounting depreciation process manufacture artificially lower level of return on equity in the base years where an asset is put into service. It is seen that if the return on equity is unsatisfactory, the DuPont analysis would indicate the parts of the organization that is not performing effectively (Rigamonti et al. 2015). Formulae: return on assets= net profit margin *total asset turnover With respect to the hotel that is under consideration, it is seen that DuPont analysis of the hotel can be understood as following: Return on asset= 0.0134*1.42 =0.019028 Common Size Financials The common size financial is a statement that explains income and expense account items as a percentage of sales and the balance sheet items as a percentage of total assets in order to make the comparison easy. Therefore, after knowing the details of the procedure for financial analysis it can be said that in the given case study only the income statement and common size statement are provided but in order to construct a comprehensive analysis it is essential to have a balance sheet as well and with the help of the balance sheet financial position of the hotel can be attained. In order to calculate all the ratios it is mandatory to have balance sheet data. Along with income and expense account and the balance sheet there is a need for the cash flow statement (Laudon and Traver 2013). The cash flow statement depicts the actual position of the hotel. The income statement would express how much sales and expenditure has occurred and on the other hand the cash flow statement will reveal the amount the hotel has received and have paid in real. Leaving apart the financial statements of the hotel, the financial statement should have the information about the competitors of the hotel. Therefore, the hotel can compare itself with the industry and must gain knowledge about the pattern of the market. Evaluation of the measures required to correct any adverse trends: As discussed above by observing the income statement and the comparative financial statement it can be said that the performance of the hotel is very weak. The hotel is not even on breakeven point as it has being incurring losses. The following are the methods the management can use in order to increase the performance of the hotel: Provide maximum hospitality: The hotel staff should treat every guest very special. They should be polite, responsive, and for everyone they should have a sense of urgency. The experience of the hotel should be memorable for the guest Staff should the trained for everyday basis not just for one time affair: The hotel should employee experienced staff and should have regular supervision over their performance. Their remuneration or commission should be proportionate to the sales so they are well motivated to focus on increasing sales. Better marketing strategies: The hotel should identify their target audience and should do marketing through various sources. It should list itself on the best website and should offer various schemes and should also do advertising on social media, newspaper and should offer various discount coupons so the number of customer increases. The hotel should also provide some schemes for the customer residing in the hotel such as providing free breakfast, spa services. They should even focus on making the hotel kid friendly such as having baby chairs in the restaurant, having kids room and having baby tubes to access the pool. Providing delightful meals: The customer satisfaction is the best way to operate the business. The customer arrives at the restaurants to enjoy food. So the hotels should give maximum focus to the quality of food they are serving to their customers. The restaurants should have proper management and stringent controls over the quality of food they are serving. Their staff should be neatly dressed and should provide quick service. Proper forecast by top management: In the given case study the performance of the hotel is very poor. Therefore, the top level management should study what are the strategies followed by their competitors who are running a successful business. The top level management should study the pattern regarding exactly what is going wrong in their process. The management should make practical forecasts, targets and proper incentive schemes for their employees. Ambiance: The customers arrive at the hotels to enjoy ambiance, environment and meals. Therefore, the hotel should have proper provision of air cooling, music and very prim and proper ambiance. Spending too much on administration and day to day maintenance expense: In the given case study there is an imbalance between the income and expenditure. It has been observed that the sales are very low and on the other hand there is too much of expenditure on the administration and day to day expenditure. Therefore, the management should undertake maximum exploitation of the given resources and should not go overboard with their expenditure. Management Actions It is essential for the management to undertake various steps and strategies that would be influential for the improvement in the financial scenario of the hotel. It has been observed that the hotel has been facing losses and the financial statement of the hotel has not indicated any positive sign. Hence, the initiation of the various steps and actions can be helpful for the improvement in the financial statement of the hotel. It is seen that the management should look to improve the financial condition by managing and supervising the construction of the financial data so that effective results can be obtained (Cinelli, Coles and Kirwan 2015). The management should even look to construct strategies that would increase customer base of the hotel. It is essential to provide various attractive schemes and promotional activities that would be fundamental for increasing the sales margin of the hotel. The introduction of various additional facilities like free-Wi-Fi, pools and fusion resta urants can be fundamental for improving the financial activities and the operational activities of the firm. The improvement in the service quality and the food quality can increase the level of revenue of the hotel. The management should even undertake effective training program for their employees in order to make them stay updated with the market. The management should even enhance the communication level among the employees so that improvement in the operational activities can be developed (Evangelou and Ioannidis 2013). Feedback from the customers can even be taken in order to understand the faults and the grievances that are seen in the hotel so that effective measures can be taken in order to improve the financial position of the hotel. It has been observed that all the ratios that have been explained above cannot be explained with respect to the financial figures that have been provided with respect to the hotel. Therefore, it is seen that only a few of the ratios have been used in order to understand the financial position of the company. Asset Turnover Ratio= 0.0142 Net Profit Margin= -1.34% Return on Assets= -1.90% Conclusion The analysis of the financial statements that have been provided by the hotel reveals that the financial condition of the hotel is very poor and the financial statement only comprises of the income statement and there is non-existence of a balance sheet and the cash flow statement. Therefore, the hotel needs to construct their balance sheet and the cash flow statement and in this manner can improve their financial scenario. It is seen that implementation of the strategies that have been suggested in this paper would be fundamental for the development and expansion of the hotel and in that manner would increase their revenue of the firm. Therefore, the implementation of these strategies would enhance the operations of the hotel and in that manner improve the financial condition of the hotel.
